Kile makes a choice, gas suppllies and what to do about Russia

21 July

Some time ago I wrote about the so-called peace dividend and how the drawdown of our armed forces was a false economy to me. The crisis in the Ukraine, and yes, it is a crisis, shows just how premature our governments have been since the Berlin Wall came thirty odd years ago. The Malayan airplane that has crashed in Eastern Ukraine looks pretty much like it was shot down by a Russian missile.

Cameron was on the news saying that there will be action if and when it is proved that Russia was behind it. Come on Daft Dave, what action? We don’t have the armed forces to do anything so it’s either economic or political measure that need to be taken. So far Russia hasn’t been all that bothered by the sanctions already applied. So what else is there?

The Russian Embassy could be forced closed and the diplomats sent back home. OK, fine; but Russia will only do the same thing to the UK embassy in Moscow. Who that hurt the most? There seems to be a lot more of a British presence there than there is of a Russian presence here. And don’t forget, we buy a goodly amount of our gas supplies from there now. What do we do if they close the pipe to the West? I suppose it will give Daft Dave another reason to point to fracking as being needed more than ever.

Saturday’s storms caused a lot of flooding in the town centre (https://www.youtube.com/watch?sns=fb&v=5MSrjWJ4fIo&app=desktop); sorry about the ad though. That flooding is on the A444 Queens Road junction, one of the major through routes in town. Maybe it can explain why Queens Road was called Washbrook Lane before it got changed over a hundred years ago. I’ve not seen it that bad there though for quite some time. I suppose now there will calls for better drainage and even more congestion if it gets done.

Kile’s mum phone us today because we are due to pick him up for a couple of days; Kile has decided he wants to stop at his mate’s house and play. It’s something we have been expecting for some time now, so it’s not a surprise for us. We love having him, but I’ve said before he does get bored here after a day or two, and even more so when we can’t take him out.

Today’s photo is an old one, a very old one, two actually …

The top one is of Granddad and Grandma Jayne, my mother and Dave just getting in on the act on left. The bottom one is Grandma Clark and Grandma Jane withy Granddad Jayne behind her. The lady with her back turned to camera beside GM Jayne is Auntie Eva with my mother looking away, probably keeping an eye on what I was doing.

Today’s funny …

I was recently chosen as foreman for the jury I was on. We ended up acquitting the defendant. When we came back into the courtroom the judge yelled at us, “How were you able to acquit?” “Insanity,” I replied. “All 12 of you?” he retorted.
