NHS, DNA and dosh

22 December

The NHS is getting involved with anew DNA testing thingy, and I’m not at all sure about it. The idea is fine in principle, how could anyone really moan about the need to find ways of treating or preventing some of the nasty illnesses some people have? My problem comes not from that but from the pressure the NHS may come under. Did I say ‘may’? There is no ‘may’ is there; they will come under pressure over it. How long before an Insurance company will offer a large wad of dosh for the details, legally or not? How long before the Police are there demanding profiles if it means they can arrest a criminal, major or minor? That is going to be one of the major objections I think.

The insurance offers to buy data is perhaps likely to be the most attractive seeing the cash flow problem the NHS continues to have. One where there could be massive savings however, is with staff costs. Hey, stop that it hurts; get that knife out of me back; no, I won’t withdraw the comment! Why not you might be wondering. Well, it’s like this … The NHS employs probably the largest workforce in the UK right now, a work force that has to be paid. Managers will say that they have cut back as far as they can without effecting patient care. But I have to ask if that is correct?

Last time I was in A&E because of chest pains, I lay there close to the nurse’s station and watched what was going on. At one end were two medical students who just sat there and worked on their lappy’s. Why didn’t they get stuck in and help out? Shadowing a doctor or nurse while they see patients; learning how to stitch and wound or applying some sort of dressing might have been a better use of their time. And what about nurses and other staff members? I’ve seen nurses and other staff standing around chatting about up-coming weddings, last night’s party, tonight’s binge session in a new pub … … … You get my meaning I’m sure.

Staff time can be used far more productively than it is now. It seems that at time there is far too many staff on duty and others where there just aren’t enough, night duty is main one I can think of. A really good root and branch inspection of the whole system is needed. That way the dosh the NHS now gets will be spent more wisely. And that would mean that the NHS wouldn’t need to be tempted by insurance company offers.

And so now for a photo …

This is a leafless tree set againt a blue sky outside our block of flats.

Today’s funny …

Existence was so tranquil and peaceful for the young couple Adam and Eve, like straight out of a story book, until one unfortunate day when Adam showed up one hour late for supper. By the time Adam finally came home Eve was a nervous wreck, and her imagination was working overtime. “Honey, what happened? Why are you home so late?” Questioned Eve. “Oh I’m sorry! Adam responded with a wave of his hand, “I just lost track of the time.” Now Eve didn’t have a Mother or girlfriend around to calm her fears, after all it was just her and her Husband and despite Adam’s convincing act her overactive imagination could not be calmed. That night after two hours of restlessly turning in her bed, enough was enough. “WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING!” Hollered Adam jumping out of bed. “YOU KNOW DARN WELL WHAT I’M DOING” Screamed Eve right back, “NOW YOU BETTER LAY STILL RIGHT NOW, AND LET ME FINISH COUNTING THOSE RIBS!
