It's
happened again! A company has gone belly
up and the pension pot of its workers has disappeared. This time it is UK Coal which has gone into
administration after the fire at Daw Mill a few months ago. It's not just their pensions that have been
effected though; their redundancy payments have also been slashed and now they
will have just the bare legal minimum.
This happens time and time again within the UK. It's time that the government - of whatever
colour - got it sorted out to prevent it happening again.
Our local
Muppet Person is upset and angry. This
time I tend to think he may be right on this issue. The Borough Plan consultation is going on
over this month and early August. MP
Jones is claiming that the effect on the borough is such that a letter should
have been sent out to every household.
That didn't happen, instead there is a road show-type thing going on at
various points around Dorktown and Bed'th where members of the public can make
their thoughts and comments known.
The show
will be in Dorktown market this coming Saturday and hopefully I shall go and
have a look. However, we have friends
calling in on Friday and staying the night in the guest room in the complex our
flat is part of. Seeing as they haven't
been to the town before we thought they might like a look around the
market. If so then I might not get to
see the show and will have to look out for it again; we'll have to wait and
see.
Coventry has
a transport museum in city centre, and very good it is too. Museums are always worthwhile in view and
even more so when the exhibits are not just stuck in a glass case for us all to
look and marvel at. July 6th was the
100th birthday of Lionel Clarke. In the
photos in today's News he looks very
bright and happy. Lionel is motor mad according
to the report so the Transport Museum sent along a large cream coloured Daimler
to take him out for a ride. He seems to
have loved that. Lionel had a good day
then. Not only reaching 100 years old, a
ride in a vintage Daimler and a card from Lizzy 2, he had his family around
with him too. How often have we seen
people reach such milestones without any family there to celebrate with
them. Well done Lionel, and a belated
Happy Birthday.
Seeing as we
talking of the Coventry Transport Museum I though a photo from my last visit
there is in order ...
This is another
Daimler, a 1935 model which I think is the one that Queen Mary rode in when she
visited Coventry that year.
And today's
funny is ...
A hungry but penniless bloke walks into a
seedy cafe in Glasgow. He sits at the counter and notices Jock with his arms
folded staring blankly at a bowl of chilli. After fifteen minutes of just
sitting there staring at it, the hungry bloke bravely asks, "If you aren't
going to eat that, mind if I do?" The old Jock slowly turns his head
toward the young bloke and says, "Aye, ye can gae right aheid."
Eagerly, the young bloke reaches over and slides the bowl over to his place and
starts spooning it in with delight. He gets nearly down to the bottom and
notices a dead mouse in the chilli. The sight was shocking and he immediately
pukes up the chilli back into the bowl.
The old Jock says, "Aye, that's as far as I got too."
