Birds, waist and gambling

9 February 2013

Finally we did manage to get out birding yesterday, down to Slimbridge.  Not a bad day really although we did keep missing the bittern that was showing and flying around.  Our total day list was 43 species with 30 for our year list.  That is not a lot for some birders who would be think it a wasted day to get so few.  For us though, it's very good.  We like to be out in the fresh air and enjoy seeing the birds.  Yes we do run list but the lists are not the be all and end all of a day's birding.  That is the province of the twitchers, not birder watchers.

Neither of us would be feeling like doing a lot yesterday when we got home, we never do really so we decided that we stop at a MacDonald's on the way back.  Jan asked to two packs of 6 chicken nuggets, she ended up with a box of 20 simply because it was a lot cheaper to buy then like that.  It's no wonder there's a fat people problem in the western world.  Of course we could have said, "No, two sixes please," but the extra price makes it hard to refuse the cheaper option.  The good old British chippy is just as bad.  A normal portion of cod and chips is enough to fed two, not one.  Instead of raising prices they should cut down the portion size; that would help their profits and help to reduce waist size as well waste in the large context.  How much of the normal cod and chips actually gets thrown away I wonder?

And talking weight ... it's been some time since I got on the scales but yesterday I had to tighten my belt by a notch or two.  That was a pleasant surprise but I'm not going to complain about it ;-)))

Regular readers will know that I am not really into sports.  Another so-called 'sport' I loathe is horse racing.  There may be skill in raiding a horse but it's hardly sport as such to my mind.  Anyway, the first proper horse race as such was run at Roodeye Field in Chester in 1540.  Now the world has a gambling problem that is not being controlled in anyway.  Not so long ago it was revealed that a number of footie games here in the UK had been fixed by a criminal gang based in Malaya.  A day or two later plans were announced to build a new super casino next to the NEC site near Brum - backed by businesses based in - yes, that's right - Malaya.  Am I the only one finding this to be a wee bit odd?

So then, yesterday I ended up with 128 images.  Of those 128 images I finally got just 23 keepers.  Here's one I'm really please with ...

Funny time ... sorry, couldn't resist this one ...

Due to a water shortage in Ireland the Dublin swimming baths have announced they will be closing lanes 5 & 6 until further notice.
